Year 13 Exam Prep

2025 Specifications

The questions will require candidates to discuss the decisions and considerations made during the development of the digital outcome, and evaluate both the outcome and the development process (see Explanatory Notes 4 and 5 of the standard).

The discussion will require candidates to focus on how the following considerations were considered during development of the digital outcome:

• selection of tools and techniques
• influence of stakeholder feedback
• aesthetics
• functionality
• cultural and / or ethical OR sustainability and / or futureproofing
• usability
• intellectual property.

3 Images

For this assessment you are required to provide 3 screenshots of your outcome.
This is helpful because you can also refer to your outcome in the exam.
The 3 Screenshots can be of multiple windows. I highly recommend having multiple windows for the development screenshot
Picture
Digital Outcome Image
A single image of the digital outcome (e.g. a website, a brand identity package, an electronic device)

For example if it is an animation your screenshot may be two different phases of the animation
Picture
Picture
Development Process
a single image of their development process (e.g. agile development, a planning chart).

This is where you would show your gantt chart or agile development chart.
Development Tools
a single sample image showing a relevant digital component of the outcome in the software used to create it, for example:
  • the HTML / CSS for a website in a text editor (e.g. VS Code, Notepad++)
  • the ‘layers’ view of a vector or raster graphic (e.g. in Inkscape / Illustrator, GIMP / Photoshop)
  • the source code for controlling an electronic device (e.g. in Arduino C, PBasic)
  • the CAD / CAM file for a 3D model (e.g. in Blender, Fusion 360, SketchUp)
  • the source code for an application in a suitable text editor (e.g. VS Code, Replit).
Task: Take three screenshots of your work, put them inside a word document and then upload them to your one note:

Achieved Level Questions

Using the image of your digital outcome, describe what it is and its intended purpose. Explain how it meets the needs of its intended users.

Refer to the image showing a digital component of your outcome in its development software. Describe the tools and techniques you used to create this component and explain why you chose them.

Describe one piece of feedback you received from a stakeholder during the development of your digital outcome. Explain how you incorporated this feedback into your project.

Using the image of your digital outcome, describe the aesthetic choices (e.g., colors, layout, design elements) you made. Explain how these choices suit the purpose of the outcome

Explain how your digital outcome works, referring to the image of the digital component. Describe one feature that ensures it functions as intended.

Describe one way you ensured your digital outcome was easy for users to interact with. Provide an example of how this was achieved in your project.

Describe one cultural, ethical, sustainability, or futureproofing consideration you thought about during development. Explain how this influenced a decision you made.

Explain how you ensured your digital outcome respected intellectual property. Provide an example of a resource (e.g., image, code, or font) you used and how you confirmed it was legal to use.

Refer to the image of your development process (e.g., agile development, planning chart). Describe the steps you followed to develop your digital outcome and explain how this process helped you complete the project.

Merit Level Questions

Using the image of the digital component, explain why the tools and techniques you chose were more suitable than at least one alternative. Justify how your choices improved the quality of your digital outcome.

Discuss how stakeholder feedback influenced a specific change in your digital outcome. Explain why this change was necessary and how it improved the outcome’s effectiveness for its intended users.

Refer to the image of your digital outcome. Discuss how your aesthetic choices (e.g., colors, typography, layout) supported the functionality of the outcome. Provide a specific example to justify your decisions.

Explain how you tested the usability of your digital outcome and used the results to make improvements. Provide a specific example of a usability issue you identified and how you addressed it.

Discuss how a cultural, ethical, sustainability, or futureproofing consideration shaped a key decision in your development process. Justify why this consideration was important for your digital outcome’s context or users.

Explain how you ensured all resources used in your digital outcome complied with intellectual property requirements. Discuss one specific resource shown in your images and justify the steps you took to confirm its legal use.

Refer to the image of your development process. Discuss how your chosen development approach (e.g., agile, waterfall) influenced the efficiency or quality of your project. Explain one specific decision you made to adapt your process and why it was effective.

Evaluate how well your digital outcome meets its intended purpose, referring to the image of the outcome. Discuss one strength and one limitation, explaining how they relate to your design decisions.

Excellence Level Questions

Pick four of these questions and answer them.
Refer to the image of the digital component. Critically evaluate your choice of tools and techniques compared to at least two alternatives. Discuss how your choices impacted the development process and the quality of the final outcome, including any trade-offs you considered.

Critically evaluate how stakeholder feedback shaped the development of your digital outcome. Discuss one specific instance where feedback led to a significant change, analyzing how this improved the outcome and what challenges you faced in implementing it.

Using the image of your digital outcome, critically evaluate how you balanced aesthetic appeal with functionality. Discuss a specific design decision where these two aspects conflicted and explain how you resolved it, including the impact on the user experience.

Critically evaluate the usability of your digital outcome, referring to feedback or testing you conducted. Discuss how your design decisions prioritized user needs and analyze one area where usability could still be improved, justifying your reasoning.

Critically analyze how a cultural, ethical, sustainability, or futureproofing consideration influenced your development process. Discuss the broader implications of this consideration for your digital outcome’s users or context, and evaluate how effectively you addressed it.

Critically evaluate how you ensured your digital outcome adhered to intellectual property principles. Discuss a specific resource shown in your images, analyzing the ethical implications of its use and how you mitigated any potential risks.

Refer to the image of your development process. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of your development approach (e.g., agile, waterfall). Discuss how it influenced the outcome’s success and analyze one aspect of the process you would change to improve future projects, justifying your reasoning.

Critically evaluate the overall success of your digital outcome, referring to all three images. Analyze how your decisions across tools, stakeholder feedback, aesthetics, functionality, usability, and ethical/sustainability considerations contributed to the outcome’s strengths and limitations. Discuss one key lesson learned that could improve your approach in future projects.
