Conventions

Introduction

Both the Media outcome and the Design outcome require that you look at using conventions in your outcome.

A convention is defined as the following:
"a way in which something is usually done"

To explain this a little bit more I want us to look at the following screenshot
Picture
Let's focus for a moment on the Health.

The health is not in the middle of the screen but located in the top corners(out of the way). In fact it is quite usual for any user interface elements to be in the corners.

They also use hearts and the colour red. These are conventions the way that things are usually done.

Let's take a look at another game.
Picture
Dead space broke standard conventions by hiding all user interfaces into the game. There was no GUI overlay for Dead Space

Conventions themselves are made for reasons, but this does not mean that they cannot be broken.
Other games such as dark souls broke conventions by not having a map or mini map.

Conventions with your assessment.

The upcoming assessments list conventions as follows:

usability heuristics
visual hierarchy
film genre conventions
relevant composition methods
schematic diagram conventions
system block diagrams
circuit schematics with component symbols
scale drawings of enclosures
naming conventions and naming schemes
object-relationship mapping and data modelling.

*In bold are the ones relating to games.

Tip: While you may use chatGPT to generate a list of film genre conventions you must show research from other secondary sources (websites or books etc).

Where to from here

Let the teacher know what kind of outcome you are going to make, we will then help advise what type of convention

Then research them to apply to your designs.
